Prithvi Shaw, once hailed as the next Sachin Tendulkar, has been facing a turbulent phase in his career. After being touted as a prodigy with comparisons to legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, and Virender Sehwag, the young batsman's career has taken an unexpected turn. Recent events, including going unsold in the IPL 2025 auction and reports of disciplinary issues, have put Shaw under immense scrutiny.
Amidst these challenges, a ray of hope appeared for Shaw in the form of his idol, Sachin Tendulkar. Approximately two months ago, Shaw had a conversation with Tendulkar, who has been a guiding figure in his cricketing journey since childhood. Tendulkar's advice served as a crucial reality check for the struggling cricketer.
Shaw revealed that Tendulkar is well aware of his journey and has been a constant source of support. Their connection goes back to Shaw's childhood, as he and Tendulkar's son, Arjun, have been friends since the age of 8 or 9. Tendulkar's presence has been a familiar one throughout their formative years.
During their recent meeting, Tendulkar encouraged Shaw to refocus and get back on track. Shaw said that when things go wrong, a mentor is needed to "light a spark" within. Tendulkar told Shaw, "Prithvi, I still believe in you, and I'll continue to do so... Come back on the same track as earlier. Everything is possible in the next 13-14 years."
Once a mainstay in the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad, Shaw's recent struggles led to his exclusion, further highlighting the need for a change in approach. Moreover, not being picked for the IPL and going unsold in the cash-rich league this year came as a new setback. Once considered the next big thing in Indian cricket, Shaw has been grappling with persistent controversies and fitness concerns. Over the past few years, his weight gain has been noticeable, raising questions about his adherence to the fitness standards required for international cricket.
Shaw's last appearance for the Indian team was in 2021. Recognizing the need for a fresh start, the 25-year-old is reportedly seeking a change of scenery and is set to move from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for the upcoming domestic season.
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif, who has also worked with Shaw, pointed out how the Delhi Capitals franchise had provided Shaw with numerous opportunities, hoping he would live up to his potential. However, Shaw's repeated failures led the team management to reconsider his place in the playing XI, highlighting the harsh realities of professional cricket. Kaif also suggested that Shaw should feel embarrassed for not attracting any bids in the IPL auction despite having a base price of INR 75 lakh.
Despite the setbacks, Prithvi Shaw's talent remains undeniable. The guidance from Sachin Tendulkar, coupled with a renewed focus on discipline and fitness, could potentially pave the way for his resurgence. The coming years will be crucial in determining whether Shaw can overcome his challenges and fulfill the potential that once made him the most talked-about young cricketer in India.
