ChatGPT is making waves again with its new "Record" feature, designed to record, transcribe, and summarize audio directly within the platform. This update positions ChatGPT as a potential disruptor in the meeting and transcription tool space, challenging established players like Otter.ai, Zoom, Google, and Microsoft.
The "Record" feature, announced in early June 2025, allows users to capture audio from meetings, brainstorms, or voice notes directly within the ChatGPT interface on the macOS desktop app. Once the recording is complete, ChatGPT transcribes the audio and generates a structured summary. Users can then edit the transcript, generate emails, create project plans, and even produce code based on the meeting's content.
According to OpenAI, the audio recordings are deleted immediately after transcription, and the transcripts adhere to workspace retention policies. This ensures that sensitive information discussed during meetings is not stored indefinitely. The company also states that content from Team, Enterprise, and Education workspaces is excluded from model training by default, further protecting user privacy.
Initially, the "Record" mode is exclusively available to ChatGPT Team subscribers, which costs $25 per month per user for groups of more than two people. OpenAI plans to roll out the feature to Enterprise and Education subscribers in the coming weeks.
While the "Record" feature offers several benefits, it also has limitations. Currently, it's only available on the macOS desktop app, excluding Windows users and those who need to record on the go. Unlike dedicated transcription services, ChatGPT's "Record" mode doesn't offer speaker identification, making it difficult to discern who said what in the transcript. This can be a significant drawback for teams that need accurate meeting notes and action item assignments.
Another limitation is the lack of integration with other productivity tools. Users can't import existing audio files or sync transcripts with platforms like Slack, Notion, Google Docs, HubSpot, or Salesforce. This can create workflow bottlenecks and limit the collaboration capabilities of the tool.
Despite these limitations, the "Record" feature represents a significant step forward for ChatGPT. By integrating audio recording and transcription directly into the platform, OpenAI is making it easier for users to capture and process information from meetings and conversations. The ability to generate summaries, emails, and code from these transcripts further enhances productivity and streamlines workflows.
For now, ChatGPT's "Record" mode may be best suited for personal voice notes or one-off recordings. However, as the feature evolves and addresses its current limitations, it has the potential to become a valuable tool for teams looking to improve their meeting productivity and knowledge management.
