Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted that Alexander Isak's future at the club is uncertain, with the Swedish striker expressing his desire to explore other options this summer. Isak will not participate in Saturday's Premier League opener against Aston Villa, adding to the speculation surrounding his future.

Liverpool have reportedly had a £110 million bid rejected for the 25-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022 for £63 million. Howe acknowledged Isak's situation is not in his control, stating, "As I sit here now, I don't know that. Alex will control that". He also admitted that Isak's absence has been a challenge during the pre-season.

Despite the uncertainty, Howe remains hopeful that Isak could still play for Newcastle again. "Yes, I believe there is, but of course discussions and talks would have to take place in order for that to happen," Howe said. He added that he expects Isak to be a Newcastle player on September 2nd, but reiterated that "it's not in my hands".

Isak's actions have reportedly angered and disappointed Newcastle fans, especially after his key role in the club's Carabao Cup success and Champions League qualification last season. Howe emphasized that Isak is aware of the support he has received from the club, staff, and teammates. "He's a highly intelligent person, and he knows he wouldn't have the success here without everybody connected with Newcastle," Howe said.

Newcastle are understood to be fining Isak for missing the Aston Villa match, with the maximum penalty being two weeks' wages. Despite the circumstances, Howe is confident that there is a way back for the player if no deal is reached.

Howe is also focused on strengthening the squad, regardless of Isak's situation. Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey is reportedly close to joining Newcastle, while Brentford forward Yoane Wissa is also a target. Howe acknowledged the difficulty in securing targets this summer, saying, "Yes, we've been active for a few, and for whatever reason, they haven't happened".

Sky Sports News' Keith Downie addressed questions about Isak's future, including whether he could still leave before the transfer deadline and whether he could stay after everything that has transpired. Downie noted the bridges burned with supporters and the importance of Isak being fit and firing, considering Newcastle's lack of options. He also suggested that Newcastle would need to see a change in Isak's viewpoint once the transfer window closes.

Howe maintained that Isak's future at Newcastle is "not irretrievable," but acknowledged the club is looking at replacements. With Callum Wilson's departure and the Isak situation, Howe said the team needs more attacking options.

Ultimately, Isak's future remains uncertain, with the player seemingly holding the cards. Howe is trying to navigate a difficult situation while also preparing his team for the upcoming season.
