Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India have donated a mechanical elephant to the Nediyathali Sri Siva Temple in Kodungallur, Thrissur, Kerala. The donation took place on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
The mechanical elephant, named Thaleeswaran, stands three meters tall and weighs 800 kg. The donation recognizes the temple's commitment to abstaining from using real elephants for their rituals and festivals. This marks the eleventh such donation by PETA India to temples, the first in the Kodungallur region, and the seventh in Kerala.
The mechanical elephant was inaugurated by Benny Behanan MP and V.R. Sunil Kumar, MLA. This initiative aims to prevent the suffering of live elephants that are often used in temples. Using real elephants can lead to the animals enduring injuries and psychological distress. Mechanical elephants offer a cruelty-free alternative.
PETA India has been actively promoting the use of mechanical elephants in place of live ones in temples. According to PETA, elephants are frequently subjected to harsh treatment, including being chained, prodded with sharp objects, and transported over long distances, causing them immense suffering. By donating mechanical elephants, PETA aims to help temples maintain their traditions while ensuring the well-being of animals.
Jackie Shroff has been a long-time supporter of PETA India and an advocate for animal rights. He has often spoken out against animal cruelty and has participated in various campaigns to raise awareness about animal welfare issues.
This donation highlights a growing awareness and sensitivity towards animal welfare within religious and cultural practices. Several temples in Kerala have already adopted mechanical elephants, demonstrating a willingness to embrace modern solutions that align with ethical values.
