Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to launch a "Voter Adhikar Yatra" in Bihar on August 17, 2025, a 16-day march spanning 23 districts to highlight issues with voter lists and advocate for electoral rights. The yatra, covering 1,300 km, will begin in Sasaram and culminate in a rally in Patna on September 1.
The "Vote Adhikar Yatra" aims to address concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, with allegations of "vote theft" and disenfranchisement of voters. Gandhi has criticized the Election Commission, accusing it of becoming a "compartment" of the BJP's "double engine" government. The Congress party asserts it will fight for the "one man, one vote" principle.
Several leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD, are expected to participate in the yatra. The Mahagathbandhan in Bihar consists of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Indian National Congress (INC), and Left parties, including Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation-CPIML (Liberation) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM). The yatra is intended to build momentum for the INDIA bloc ahead of the upcoming assembly polls in Bihar.
The yatra will cover 25 districts of the state, with three "break days" on August 20, 25 and 31. The concluding rally will be held at Gandhi Maidan in Patna.
Pawan Khera, the Congress' media and publicity department head, stated that this "Voter Rights Yatra" will be a historic march and a milestone in the history of Indian democracy. Rahul Gandhi has stated that this is not just an election issue but a decisive battle to protect democracy, the Constitution, and the principle of one man-one vote. Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram believes the march will send a message across Bihar to drive out those who have indulged in vote theft and rode to power through vote chori.
The INDIA bloc has raised concerns about the SIR, alleging mass deletions of eligible voters. Rahul Gandhi presented evidence of vote theft in Karnataka, suggesting similar issues could arise in Bihar. Some leaders within the INDIA bloc have even considered boycotting the assembly elections over concerns with the electoral rolls. The Congress party has challenged the Chief Election Commissioner to scrutinize the voter lists, asserting they will not accept electoral rolls prepared through the Election Commission's ongoing SIR.
