Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. With this victory, Mexico advances to the semifinals where they will face Honduras.

The match was aphysical affair, particularly in the first half, which ended scoreless. Tensions flared just before halftime, resulting in yellow cards for Saudi Arabia's Ali Majrashi and Mexico's Jesús Gallardo after a shoving incident. Gallardo will miss the semifinal match due to the accumulation of yellow cards.

The second half saw a breakthrough for Mexico when Alexis Vega scored in the 49th minute, ending a 19-match scoreless streak in international play that dated back to 2022. Raúl Jiménez delivered a precise pass, and although Vega's initial shot was blocked by Saudi goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi, Vega quickly rebounded and slotted the ball through the goalkeeper's legs. The goal was initially ruled offside but was allowed after a VAR review. Vega's goal also ended a dry spell for Mexico, who had not scored in 166 minutes of play.

Mexico extended their lead in the 81st minute with an own goal by Saudi Arabia's Abdullah Madu. Mateo Chavez sent a crossing pass towards Roberto Alvarado, but Madu inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net.

Saudi Arabia, making their Gold Cup debut as a guest team, struggled to penetrate Mexico's defense despite a resilient performance. They exit the tournament after a group stage that included a win over Haiti, a loss to the United States, and a draw with Trinidad and Tobago. Saudi Arabia has never defeated Mexico in international play, with six losses and one draw.

Mexico will now face Honduras in the semifinals on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Honduras advanced by defeating Panama in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. The winner of the Mexico vs. Honduras match will advance to the final, which is scheduled for July 6 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
