The Madhya Pradesh BJP is poised to announce a new state president, with the decision expected on July 2. The party is seeking a fresh face to replace the current chief, VD Sharma, who has held the position since February 2020. While Sharma's term officially concluded in February 2023, he was granted an extension to lead the party through the November 2023 assembly elections.
Several names are circulating as potential contenders, reflecting the BJP's considerations of caste dynamics, tribal representation, and women leadership. With Chief Minister Mohan Yadav belonging to the OBC category, there's speculation that the party might opt for an upper-caste or a tribal leader to maintain a balanced representation.
Tribal Leaders in the Mix
To boost tribal representation, the BJP is reportedly considering a tribal leader for the state chief position. Faggan Singh Kulaste, an eight-time MP and former Union Minister, is a prominent name in this context. Kulaste has considerable influence in tribal areas and has served the party in various capacities. The party may be considering creating a narrative of being pro-tribal by appointing him as state BJP president. Gajendra Singh Patel and Sumer Singh Solanki are other tribal leaders under consideration.
Women Leaders in Contention
To promote gender diversity, the BJP may also consider appointing a woman for the post. While the MP BJP has never had a woman chief, the central leadership is known to spring surprises. Several women leaders are being considered, including Archana Chitnis, Usha Thakur, Kavita Patidar, Sandhya Rai, and Riti Pathak.
Other Potential Candidates
Besides tribal and women leaders, other names are also in the mix. These include former ministers Narottam Mishra, Brijendra Pratap Singh, and Arvind Singh Bhadoria. Alok Sharma, a party MP from Bhopal, and Hemant Khandelwal, an MLA from Betul, are also seen as potential candidates. Raghvendra Sharma, the current office secretary in the party's state unit, is also a possible contender, given his strong backing in the RSS.
Caste and Political Balance
Caste dynamics are likely to play a key role in the selection process. The BJP aims to strike a balance between different communities and regions while ensuring that the new state chief can unify the party and address the interests of key communities.
Decision-Making Process
The final decision on the state's top party post will be made by the central leadership, possibly based on advice from the RSS. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's preference may also be considered to improve coordination between the government and the organization. The central leadership is believed to be pursuing a consensus-based approach, aiming to align the state-level leadership with its national strategic objectives while minimizing internal dissent.
The appointment of the new state BJP chief is significant as the party gears up for future elections and seeks to maintain its stronghold in Madhya Pradesh. The new leader will be expected to strengthen the party's base, unify the cadre, and effectively counter the opposition.
