The political atmosphere in West Bengal is charged following the alleged gangrape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College. A fact-finding team from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has arrived in Kolkata to investigate the incident, sparking a reaction from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), further intensifying the political clash.
The BJP's fact-finding team consists of four members: former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, and Members of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb and Manan Kumar Mishra. The team's stated goal is to assess the law and order situation in West Bengal and to speak with stakeholders related to the case.
Upon arrival in Kolkata, Biplab Kumar Deb expressed concern over the safety of women in West Bengal, particularly in educational institutions. He alleged that the team was denied permission to visit South Calcutta Law College and to meet with the chief secretary. Deb stated that the team would submit a report to BJP National President J.P. Nadda. Satpal Singh said that the committee members would speak to all the stakeholders and try to meet the family members of the victims. Singh also hoped that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would allow their team to visit all the places.
The TMC has strongly criticized the BJP's move. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh dismissed the fact-finding mission as a "gimmick" and "political tourism". Ghosh questioned the BJP's selective outrage, pointing to crimes against women in other states, including those governed by the BJP. He argued that the police have already taken action, arrests have been made, and an investigation is underway, and that the victim's family trusts the process. According to Ghosh, the BJP is interfering with the police's work under the guise of a fact-finding mission.
Meenakshi Lekhi, a member of the BJP's fact-finding team, said that a factual investigation would determine how a person involved in criminal incidents was allowed to enter the University. She stated that there should be a factual investigation to determine how a person who has been involved in criminal incidents was allowed to enter the University.
Adding to the controversy, the BJP fact-finding team has alleged that criminals are appointed as teachers and staff in colleges without proper verification. Lekhi said that criminals are appointed in colleges as ad-hoc teachers or staff without any verification. She also expressed surprise over the inaccessibility of the National Commission for Women (NCW) team of the law college.
The Kolkata Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the gangrape. The police have formed a special investigation team to probe the incident and have vowed to take the "harshest legal action".
The incident has sparked a political firestorm in West Bengal, with the BJP and TMC engaging in a war of words. The BJP is using the incident to attack the TMC government's law and order record, while the TMC is accusing the BJP of politicizing the crime for political gain.
