Canucks' Free Agency: Three Center Targets to Bolster Vancouver's Roster and Enhance Offensive Depth.

The Vancouver Canucks are heading into the 2025 free agency period with a glaring need: a top-six center. After a disappointing season that saw them miss the playoffs, and with key players potentially departing, General Manager Patrik Allvin is under pressure to bolster the team's offensive capabilities. President Jim Rutherford has emphasized the necessity of acquiring a high-impact center, even if it requires an expensive trade or dipping into the free-agent market. With the free agency period opening on July 1st, let's examine three centers the Canucks should target.

1. Mitch Marner

Mitch Marner is arguably the most sought-after player in the 2025 free agency class. The Toronto Maple Leafs star is coming off a career-high 102-point season (27 goals, 75 assists) and is known for his exceptional playmaking skills. Marner has been a key component of the Maple Leafs' offense in recent years. Although primarily a winger, Marner's versatility allows him to play center effectively. Landing Marner would provide a significant boost to the Canucks' top line and overall offensive production. However, acquiring Marner will come at a steep price, with projections estimating a contract in the $13-14 million range. The Carolina Hurricanes were previously interested in acquiring Marner. With the Canucks' limited salary cap space, signing Marner would require some financial maneuvering.

2. John Tavares

John Tavares is a seasoned veteran who has consistently produced throughout his NHL career. Despite being 34 years old, Tavares remains a capable scoring threat, demonstrated by his 38-goal season. He has a proven track record of being a point-per-game player for 15 straight seasons. Tavares is also exceptional at faceoffs, ranking among the league's best. While not as dynamic as Marner, Tavares would provide stability and offensive prowess to the Canucks' top-six. Although Tavares may command a significant salary, it's likely to be less than Marner's, potentially making him a more affordable option for Vancouver. One potential drawback is that his defensive stats have dipped recently.

3. Jack Roslovic

Jack Roslovic presents a more affordable and versatile option for the Canucks. The 28-year-old can play any forward position, including center, and is known for his consistent offensive output. Roslovic has consistently been a 40-45 point player, scoring 22 goals in the 2024-25 season. He also contributes on both the power play and penalty kill. Roslovic's versatility and reasonable contract projections make him an attractive target for the Canucks, who need to fill multiple holes in their forward group. Some reports suggest he could be signed for around $4.094 million AAV. While he may not be a game-breaking talent, Roslovic would provide valuable depth and flexibility to the Canucks' roster.
