Al-Hilal Stuns Man City in Club World Cup Thriller: Extra Time Goal Secures Victory

Al-Hilal has stunned Manchester City, knocking them out of the FIFA Club World Cup after a thrilling 4-3 victory in extra time. The Saudi Arabian side secured their place in the quarterfinals, where they are set to face Fluminense of Brazil.

The match, held in Orlando, Florida, saw Al-Hilal eliminate the reigning UEFA Champions League winners in a dramatic Round of 16 encounter. Marcos Leonardo emerged as the hero for Al-Hilal, scoring two crucial goals, including the decisive strike in the 112th minute. Key players such as Bono, Milinkovic-Savic, and Koulibaly also played significant roles in the victory.

The first half saw Manchester City take the lead with a goal from Bernardo Silva in the 9th minute. However, Al-Hilal came back strong in the second half, with Marcos Leonardo and Malcom finding the net to put the Saudi side ahead. Erling Haaland responded for Manchester City, leveling the score and forcing the game into extra time.

In extra time, Kalidou Koulibaly scored from a corner to give Al-Hilal the lead, but Phil Foden quickly equalized for City. Marcos Leonardo then sealed the victory for Al-Hilal with his second goal of the night in the 112th minute.

Al-Hilal's victory marks a significant achievement for the club, as they advance to the Club World Cup quarterfinals. This win also marks the first under new Italian head coach Simone Inzaghi, who joined the team on June 5th. Al-Hilal had previously secured their spot in the Round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Mexico's Pachuca, finishing second in Group H behind Real Madrid.

Manchester City's exit from the Club World Cup is a major setback for Pep Guardiola's side, who were considered heavy favorites after their Champions League triumph. Despite fielding a strong lineup, City struggled defensively and were unable to maintain control against a determined Al-Hilal team.

Al-Hilal's previous Club World Cup appearances include finishing fourth in both 2019 and 2021. In 2022, they reached the final, becoming the first Asian club from a non-host nation to do so, ultimately losing to Real Madrid. Al-Hilal boasts a record of four wins, four draws, and four defeats in their Club World Cup history. They have also won a record eight Asian Football Confederation trophies.

Al Hilal's progression to the quarterfinals sets up a clash with Copa Libertadores champions Fluminense.
