A Kolkata court has extended the police custody of the three main accused in the alleged gang rape of a first-year law student at South Calcutta Law College until July 8. The accused include Monojit Mishra, an alumnus and ad-hoc professor, and two students, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee. The three were initially remanded to four days of police custody after their arrest on June 26.
The case has sparked outrage and protests, with the BJP accusing the state government of failing to ensure campus safety. The National Commission for Women (NCW) visited the college to investigate the incident. Kolkata Police has formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
The victim, a 24-year-old law student, was allegedly gang-raped on June 25 in the guard's room of the college. A medical examination confirmed the gang-rape allegations, revealing evidence of forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches on her body. CCTV footage reportedly shows the victim being dragged from the gate to the college premises by two of the accused. The footage confirms the woman's allegations and shows the movements of the three accused, the security guard, and the victim.
The fourth accused in the case is the college's security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, who was arrested after police found his replies incoherent. The court has rejected bail for the security guard.
Police suspect that the motive behind the crime was the student's rejection of a marriage proposal by the prime accused, Monojit Mishra. The woman reportedly told the accused that she was happy with her boyfriend and wouldn't cheat on him. The accused allegedly forcibly locked her inside the room and threatened to kill her and her boyfriend, and get her parents arrested.
The police have collected evidence from three locations on the college campus: the students' union room, the washroom, and the guard's room. There are clear signs of a struggle in all three rooms, and the samples have been sent for forensic examination. A 1.5-minute video clip has been recovered from Mishra's mobile phone, and investigators are trying to determine if the video was shared with others.
The college authorities have terminated the services of Monojit Mishra and expelled Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee. The decision to bar the three came after a general body meeting. The college vice-principal stated that anyone without a permanent identity card would not be allowed to enter the campus and demanded that the accused be hanged.
Multiple accusations of harassment and abuse have surfaced against Mishra. Police found that Mishra had plotted to torture the survivor for a long time and targeted her on her first day at the college. Mishra's aides, Pratim Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed, also had a history of harassing women in the college. The trio had reportedly recorded several instances of harassing women on their mobile phones and used them to blackmail them.
