A construction worker, Shubhankar Jadbha Mandal, 21, from West Bengal, died, and three others were injured when a slab collapsed at an under-construction site in Pune's Camp area on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. in front of Meher Apartment on Sachapir Street, within the jurisdiction of Lashkar Police Station. The workers were dismantling the fourth-floor slab of the building when the outer part of the slab gave way.
Senior Police Inspector Girishkumar Dighavkar of Lashkar Police Station stated that Shubhankar Jadbha Mandal succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The three other workers, Cheni Mangal Mukherjee, 21, Varun, 35, and Sannyashi Bagdi, 28, all from Kolkata, sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at Sassoon General Hospital.
Another report indicates the incident happened near Sharbatwala Chowk around noon. Eyewitnesses reported a lack of proper safety measures at the site. The collapse occurred near Oasis restaurant in the Pune Camp area.
Police have initiated an investigation to determine if negligence contributed to the accident. Construction has been halted, and authorities are coordinating with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the building contractor to assess safety compliance at the site. Locals claimed that there was little to no protective equipment or barricading in use despite the ongoing construction in a crowded area, putting workers and civilians at risk.
Another report states that the accident occurred at an apartment construction site, and a pillar gave way, causing the collapse. Rescue teams responded swiftly to ensure the injured received immediate care. Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse, with initial assessments pointing to possible structural instability.
