Amidst swirling rumors and internal rumblings within the Karnataka Congress, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala has firmly dismissed any possibility of a leadership change in the state. Surjewala's statement comes as a direct response to recent speculation fueled by statements from within the party, with some MLAs openly advocating for Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to take over as Chief Minister.
Surjewala, who is also the Karnataka Congress in-charge, addressed the media in Bengaluru, stating unequivocally, "Are you taking opinion on leadership change? The answer I had given yesterday also and I am answering again today-- the answer is clearly 'no' in one word". He emphasized that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would continue to lead the government.
The Congress leader's visit to Karnataka was prompted by reports of discontent among some MLAs. Surjewala clarified that his meetings with the legislators were aimed at evaluating their performance in their respective constituencies. He advised party members to address any grievances or concerns within the party forum, rather than airing them publicly. "What we deliberate within the party should remain within the party," he stated.
Adding weight to Surjewala's denial, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also dismissed the rumors and reinforced the message of unity within the party. Shivakumar stated that a notice would be issued to Ramanagara MLA H.A. Iqbal Hussain for publicly suggesting that Shivakumar should be made Chief Minister. Shivakumar emphasized the importance of discipline and stated that "no one is in a hurry".
Surjewala also took aim at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of spreading false narratives about the collapse of the Congress government's guarantee programs. He asserted that the state government has sufficient funds for development and that the BJP is deliberately trying to undermine the Congress's welfare initiatives. "This is a bogey being raised by BJP for they want the government guarantees to be shut down," Surjewala said.
Priyank Kharge, a minister in the Karnataka government, echoed Surjewala's sentiments, stating that there is no discontentment within the party and that roles are well-defined. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have publicly displayed unity, refuting any rumors of rifts between them.
Surjewala outlined his plans to meet with all Congress MLAs from various divisions in Karnataka over the coming days. He also intends to meet with Members of Parliament (MPs), MP candidates, Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs), and district Congress committee presidents as part of an ongoing process to understand the concerns and perspectives of party members.
The Congress party is keen on maintaining stability in Karnataka and focusing on delivering on its promises to the people. By quashing the rumors of a leadership change and emphasizing unity, the party aims to project an image of strength and cohesion.
