Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha experienced an unsettling incident during an inspection of a Backward Classes (BC) girls' hostel in Payakaraopeta, Anakapalli district. While sharing a meal with the students to assess the quality of food and hygiene, she discovered a cockroach in her plate.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 30, during a surprise visit to the hostel. Anitha's visit aimed to ensure the proper implementation of the government-prescribed food menu and to check the overall living conditions. However, the discovery of the cockroach exposed the unhygienic conditions and poor food quality prevalent at the facility.
Following the incident, Anitha expressed strong disapproval of the appalling hygiene standards and food quality. She immediately ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the matter and directed officials to submit a detailed report within two days. Furthermore, she took immediate action by suspending the hostel warden, who was found to have neglected their duties by leaving work before the designated time and compromising the security of the students. Strict instructions were issued to improve the food quality and overall conditions of the hostel. The minister also ordered the immediate installation of CCTV cameras.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and criticism, raising questions about the safety and welfare of students in government-run hostels. Many have questioned how such a basic health violation could occur in a facility meant to ensure the well-being of students. The incident has brought the hostel's management practices and food safety protocols under intense scrutiny.
Anitha has also addressed claims made by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), clarifying that while she did find a cockroach in the meal, her primary concern was the poor food quality and the failure to adhere to the government-mandated menu. She accused the opposition party of spreading false information to tarnish the government's image.
Following the Home Minister's visit, district-level inspections were carried out across all hostels to assess food quality, safety, and security measures under the leadership of the District Collector. Anitha questioned whether the YSRCP leaders had ever visited government hostels during their five-year tenure, emphasizing the current government's focus on improving conditions in hostels, hospitals, and educational institutions.
This incident is not isolated, as similar instances of unhygienic conditions and pest infestations have been reported in other hostels and food establishments in Andhra Pradesh and other states. These incidents highlight the urgent need for stricter monitoring and enforcement of food safety standards to protect the health and well-being of students and the public.
