Steve Smith Poised for Second Test Return Against West Indies, Slip Fielding Role Uncertain

Steve Smith is on track to return for the second Test against the West Indies in Grenada, commencing on July 3. He has been recovering from a compound dislocation of his right little finger. The injury occurred while fielding at slips during the World Test Championship final against South Africa.

Smith missed the first Test against the West Indies in Barbados due to the injury. However, he has since rejoined the squad and participated in a full training session. He batted for almost an hour, acclimating to wearing a protective splint on his finger. Although the stitches have been removed, he will continue to wear a splint. While Smith feels good and expects no issues while batting, he is unlikely to field in his regular position at slip. Instead, he is expected to field in the outfield, possibly at mid-on, mid-off, or fine leg. Smith admitted that fielding in front of the wicket would be a new experience for him in a Test match.

Australia's head coach, Andrew McDonald, is confident about Smith's return. He stated that the decision would depend on the functionality of Smith's finger and that there would be no long-term health risks. McDonald indicated that Smith would likely slot back into the No. 4 position if passed fit.

If Smith returns, Josh Inglis is likely to make way. Inglis scored 5 and 12 in the first Test. Alex Carey acknowledged the value Smith brings to the team, highlighting his experience and confidence. He noted that adding 10,000 runs back into the lineup would be a significant boost.

West Indies coach Daren Sammy recognizes the challenge Smith poses. He acknowledged Smith's quality and the strength of the Australian team. Sammy also emphasized the importance of his bowling attack maintaining pressure to take wickets.

Australia won the first Test by 159 runs. The victory gave them 12 points in the World Test Championship. The West Indies overhauled their playing XI for the series, with Roston Chase as the new captain. Shai Hope also returned to the Test side.
