The St. Louis Blues have made a significant addition to their forward ranks, signing Pius Suter to a two-year contract worth an average annual value (AAV) of $4 million. The deal, officially announced by Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong, brings the Swiss forward to St. Louis after a career-best season with the Vancouver Canucks.
Suter, 29, is coming off a year where he recorded 25 goals and 21 assists for 46 points in 81 games. His versatility and offensive capabilities made him a sought-after free agent, and the Blues have secured his services for the next two seasons. Throughout his NHL career, Suter has played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and Vancouver Canucks, accumulating 82 goals and 80 assists in 364 games.
"Pius is a versatile player who can play in all situations," said Armstrong in a statement. "He adds depth to our forward group and brings a strong work ethic to our team."
Suter's ability to contribute offensively while also playing a responsible defensive game is a valuable asset for the Blues. He is expected to slot into a middle-six role, potentially centering a line or playing on the wing, providing Coach Jim Montgomery with options. His experience and playmaking abilities should complement the Blues' existing forward talent, which includes Jordan Kyrou, Robert Thomas, and Pavel Buchnevich.
The Blues' acquisition of Suter comes amidst other offseason moves aimed at reshaping the roster for the 2025-26 season. General Manager Doug Armstrong has been actively balancing immediate competitiveness with the team's long-term potential. Other moves by the Blues include acquiring defenseman Logan Mailloux from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for winger Zachary Bolduc, re-signing forward Matt Luff to a one-year deal, and signing center Nick Bjugstad.
The Blues are aiming to build upon their recent playoff appearance and solidify their position as a contender in the Western Conference. The addition of Suter addresses the need for reliable secondary scoring and adds a veteran presence to the locker room.
Suter's journey to the NHL began in Switzerland, where he played in the junior program of the ZSC Lions. He then came to North America to play major junior hockey with the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). After a successful junior career and a stint back with the ZSC Lions, where he was named the league's MVP in 2020, Suter made the jump to the NHL. He signed with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2020 and quickly established himself as a capable NHL player.
In his first season with Vancouver, Suter began centering a line with Dakota Joshua and Conor Garland, where the three developed some chemistry. An injury, however, derailed his time on that line, and Teddy Blueger took his place.
As the Blues prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Pius Suter brings a mix of skill, experience, and character to the team. His ability to contribute in various roles and his consistent offensive production make him a valuable asset as the Blues aim for a deep playoff run.
