Ghana has expressed a "clear interest" in acquiring defence equipment and training support from India, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary. This development occurred during discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ghanaian President John Mahama, where they explored avenues for increased defence cooperation. Ghana is particularly interested in India's support regarding equipment, personnel training, and defence systems.
India and Ghana have a history of bilateral relations, strengthened through various agreements and collaborations. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Joint Commission (JC) for Economic, Technical, and Cultural Cooperation was initially signed on November 9, 1995. This was followed by another MoU in 2016 during the President of India’s visit to Ghana, further solidifying the commitment to mutual growth. Additionally, a Protocol on Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between the MEA and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana was signed on August 5, 2002, facilitating regular dialogues.
Several high-level visits and interactions have underscored the deepening ties between the two nations. In December 2023, the Minister of State for Defence, Ajay Bhatt, visited Ghana to participate in the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting. Interactions such as the India-Africa Forum Summit, with Ghanaian President Kufuor attending the first summit in 2008 and President Mahama participating in 2015, have further cemented their relationship.
India's growing profile as a defence exporter is also evident in Brazil's expressed interest in Indian defence systems. Brazil is reportedly keen on exploring joint research, technology sharing, and training exchanges with India. Their interest spans secure communication systems, offshore patrol vessels, the Akash Air Defence system, coastal surveillance systems, and Garuda artillery guns. Furthermore, Brazil is considering joint ventures with India for manufacturing defence equipment and engaging in joint Research and Development (R&D) and co-development projects.
Prime Minister Modi's upcoming visit to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia is expected to further boost these collaborations. His visit to Brazil includes attending the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit, where discussions on defence cooperation are planned. This visit underscores India's proactive approach to strengthening its relationships with countries across the globe and promoting its indigenous defence capabilities.
India's defence exports have seen impressive growth, crossing a record of approximately Rs 24,000 crore in Financial Year 2024-25. The government aims to increase this figure to Rs 50,000 crore by 2029, highlighting its commitment to becoming a major player in the global defence market. This ambition is supported by the successful deployment of indigenous defence systems and the increasing interest from various countries in acquiring them.
