The Mumbai Police have submitted to the Bombay High Court that former celebrity manager Disha Salian died by suicide, with no evidence of foul play. This statement comes as her father, Satish Salian, continues to claim she was gang-raped and murdered.
Disha Salian died on June 8, 2020, after falling from the 14th floor of a residential building in the Malad area of Mumbai. Following her death, the city police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR).
According to the police affidavit submitted to the High Court, Disha Salian "jumped off the window of a flat out of her own volition". The postmortem report indicated no signs of sexual or physical assault. The police also stated that Salian was under "tremendous mental stress" due to a dispute with her family and difficulties with her business dealings. Senior Inspector Shailendra Nagarkar of the Malvani police station noted in the affidavit that she was also drunk at the time of the incident. Furthermore, her fiancé, who was present at the time, has also ruled out any foul play or suspicion.
Satish Salian filed a petition with the High Court in March, seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into his daughter's death and an FIR against Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray. He alleges that his daughter was found dead under mysterious circumstances and that she was raped and murdered, followed by a politically orchestrated cover-up to protect influential individuals.
The petition was presented before a bench headed by Justice A. S. Gadkari, who adjourned the hearing until July 16. The Malvani police, who initially investigated the case, maintain that Disha Salian died by suicide.
The Mumbai Police has stated before the Bombay High Court that the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) regarding the circumstances of Disha Salian's death are consistent with the findings of the earlier investigation. The SIT is continuing its probe. The police added that there is no corroborative evidence to support the claims made in the petition and no grounds to suspect the investigation. They maintain there is no basis to initiate a probe into allegations of gang rape.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has demanded an apology from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Minister Nitesh Rane for their past remarks against Aaditya Thackeray in connection with the Disha Salian case. However, Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam stated that "no closure report" has been filed in the case and the investigation is still underway.
Chitra Kishor Wagh, Maharashtra BJP Mahila Morcha President, has questioned the opposition's changing stance on the probe. Minister Sanjay Shirsat clarified that the SIT was formed to uncover the truth, not to target anyone.
