Indian hockey player Varun Kumar is aiming to make a comeback to the senior national team, viewing his selection for the India 'A' squad as a crucial opportunity. After being out of the senior team for over a year, the defender is eager to prove his mettle and regain his place.

Kumar's focus is on performing well with the India 'A' squad during their upcoming tour of Europe. He recognizes this tour as a chance to showcase his abilities and demonstrate his readiness for international hockey. The India 'A' team, led by Sanjay, is scheduled to play two matches each against Ireland, France, and the Netherlands, along with one match each against England and Belgium, starting July 8. The matches will take place in Eindhoven and Amstelveen in the Netherlands, with the match against Belgium held in Antwerp.

Missing out on the Paris Olympics was a setback for Kumar. He acknowledged the disappointment but has chosen to move forward, embracing the India 'A' opportunity as a fresh start. "Missing out on the Paris Olympics was painful. I know I was in the reckoning to make the squad but now, I have left the past behind and ready to start fresh with this opportunity to play for India 'A'," Kumar stated.

Kumar is aware of the changes in the structure and pace of the game during his time away. He is using the tour to improve his game and adapt to these changes. "Certainly, my personal goal is to return to the senior team. But more important for me right now is to improve my game. Not having played a proper tour in over one-and-a-half years, it is a long time and the game is constantly changing. The structure has changed and it has also become much faster," said Kumar. He sees this as a chance to start fresh and readjust his game.

A good performance on the Europe tour could significantly boost Kumar's chances of returning to the senior team, especially with the Asia Cup coming up next month in Rajgir. "Playing the European teams, who are preparing for the Euro Cup will be quite exciting and challenging. It will be a learning experience for me and I know a good show here will count, especially with the Asia Cup coming up in India," Kumar added.

Varun Kumar, born on July 25, 1995, has represented India in numerous international tournaments. He was a part of the Indian team that won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He has also won gold medals at the Asian Games (2022), Asia Cup (2017), and Asian Champions Trophy (2018, 2023). Additionally, he was a member of the junior World Cup-winning team in 2016.

In February 2024, Kumar faced accusations of sexual harassment but was later acquitted of all charges. Hockey India sources confirmed his inclusion in the squad after he was cleared. Following his acquittal, Kumar made his return to the national team for the two Test matches against Germany in October 2024.

Now, in July 2025, Kumar is focused on the upcoming Europe tour with India 'A'. He is determined to use this opportunity to demonstrate his skills, adapt to the evolving game, and make a strong case for his return to the senior national team.
