Germany commenced their UEFA Women's EURO 2025 campaign with a 2-0 victory over debutants Poland, but the win was overshadowed by a significant injury to captain Giulia Gwinn. The eight-time European champions secured the win in their Group C opener in St. Gallen on Friday.

Gwinn, a crucial player for Germany, was forced off the field in the first half after making a challenge to prevent Ewa Pajor from scoring. The German captain's injury occurred late in the first half, casting a pall over the team's performance. Attempting to continue, Gwinn ultimately had to leave the pitch, visibly emotional. The extent of the injury is currently unknown.

Despite the setback, Germany managed to secure a victory, with Jule Brand playing a pivotal role. Brand broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, cutting inside two defenders to score. She then provided the assist for Lea Schüller's header in the 66th minute, sealing the win for Germany.

Germany, the eight-time champion, displayed patience against a committed Poland team. Poland's defense, especially the central partnership of Paulina Dudek and Emilia Szymczak, initially kept Germany's forwards in check. However, Dudek's absence in the second half due to injury allowed Brand to capitalize and lead her team to victory.

Ann-Katrin Berger, Germany's goalkeeper, also played a crucial role, making several important saves, including a reflex save to deny Pajor's header. Berger, who missed the previous tournament after being diagnosed with cancer for the second time, became Germany's oldest player at a European Championship at 34.

While Germany secured three points, their campaign may face challenges depending on the severity of Gwinn's injury. Germany is aiming for their first major title since 2013, having narrowly missed out on the 2022 title after losing to England in the final.

In the other Group C match, Sweden defeated Denmark 1-0. Germany will need to regroup and adjust their strategy as they move forward in the tournament. The team will need to rely on other players to step up in Gwinn's absence. The depth of the squad will be tested as they navigate the rest of the group stage and, potentially, the knockout rounds.
