Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged all Members of Parliament to vote according to their conscience in the upcoming election for Vice President of India, backing the INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) bloc's candidate, Justice B. Sudershan Reddy. The election is slated for September 9 and pits Justice Reddy against the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) nominee, CP Radhakrishnan.
Revanth Reddy emphasized that the selection of Justice Sudershan Reddy was a collective decision by the INDIA alliance partners. He pointed out that Justice Reddy is not a member of the Congress party but was part of an independent committee in Telangana for Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation. The Chief Minister lauded Justice Reddy's extensive knowledge of the Constitution, highlighting the importance of protecting it.
Justice Bommagani Sudershan Reddy, born on July 8, 1946, has had a long and distinguished legal career. He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh in 1971 and practiced in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He served as a Government Pleader in the same court from 1988 to 1990 and briefly as Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government in 1990. He also served as Legal Advisor and Standing Counsel for Osmania University. Justice Reddy was appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in May 1995 and later elevated as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in December 2005. He became a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on January 12, 2007, and retired on July 8, 2011. After retiring from the Supreme Court, Justice Reddy was appointed as the first Lokayukta of Goa in March 2013 but resigned within seven months due to personal reasons.
Throughout his career, Justice Reddy has been known for his progressive judgments and unwavering commitment to justice, the Constitution, and social equality. He has also been a vocal advocate for human rights and judicial reforms. In 2011, while serving on the Supreme Court, he ordered the creation of a Special Investigation Team to investigate black money stashed abroad, and he criticized government inaction on the issue. In another notable case, he ruled that natural gas is a national asset under government control, superseding private agreements in the Ambani family gas dispute. More recently, he chaired the Independent Expert Working Group constituted by the Telangana government, which submitted a comprehensive report on the state's Socio-Economic, Education, Employment, Political, and Caste Survey to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
The Chief Minister appealed to various political parties, including the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena Party, Communist leaders, and even BJP MPs from both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, to support Justice Sudershan Reddy. Revanth Reddy also noted the historical precedent of N.T. Rama Rao of the Telugu Desam Party supporting former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, urging a similar spirit of unity.
The INDIA bloc's decision to nominate Justice Sudershan Reddy has been described as an ideologically driven move. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the Vice-Presidential contest is an ideological battle, emphasizing Justice Reddy's credentials as a champion of social, economic, and political justice. His nomination is seen as a move to uphold constitutional values and judicial independence. Justice Reddy himself has appealed to all parties, including the NDA, to support his nomination. The nomination was filed on August 21, with a meeting of all opposition MPs scheduled in the Central Hall the following day.
Justice Reddy's legal career has spanned five decades, marked by his expertise in constitutional law, taxation, service law, transparency, and civil liberties. He has also been recognized for his role in significant cases, including the impeachment of Justice Sen and disputes involving the Ambani family.
