A senior minister in West Bengal's government has threatened to leave the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following an alleged attack on his convoy in his constituency. Siddiqullah Chowdhury, the TMC minister, claims that the attack was an attempt to kill him and was planned by a corrupt TMC panchayat leader. He has demanded action against those responsible and warned that he will resign from the party if such incidents continue.
On Thursday, July 3, 2025, Chowdhury's convoy was reportedly attacked while he was visiting his Assembly constituency, Manteswar. According to sources, the protesters, identified as TMC supporters, waved black flags and vandalized his car, shouting slogans accusing him of being a "thief" and "extortionist". Chowdhury stated that stones were thrown at his car and other vehicles in the convoy, smashing windshields. He অভিযোগ that the local police were present but did not intervene. He has since contacted senior officials to report the incident.
Chowdhury has accused Azizul Haque, a local TMC leader and Zila Parishad member, of orchestrating the attack. However, Haque has denied these accusations. Rafiqul Islam Sheikh, a TMC leader and chief of Monteswar gram panchayat, claimed that the locals were expressing their anger against Chowdhury, alleging that he is a corrupt leader who extorts money and has neglected the constituency since winning the election. Sheikh described the incident as a spontaneous outburst of public anger.
In response to the attack, Chowdhury has called for a protest march on July 10. He has also issued an ultimatum to the TMC, stating that he will be forced to quit the party if such incidents persist. This is not the first time a TMC leader has issued an ultimatum. In March 2025, TMC MLA Humayun Kabir gave Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition, a 72-hour ultimatum to apologize for communal remarks against Muslim legislators, threatening consequences if he failed to do so. Also in March 2025, following alleged attacks on Hindu temples, Adhikari stated that the BJP would "toss the Muslim MLAs out of this Assembly" if they came to power in 2026.
The incident involving Chowdhury highlights the internal conflicts and tensions within the TMC. It also reflects the growing discontent among some local leaders and supporters who accuse certain party members of corruption and neglect. The upcoming protest march and Chowdhury's threat to resign could further destabilize the party and create additional challenges for the TMC leadership.
