Konkona Sen Sharma Addresses Irrfan Khan-Pankaj Tripathi Comparisons: Refusal to Engage in the Debate.

Konkona Sen Sharma has addressed comparisons between Pankaj Tripathi and the late Irrfan Khan, her co-stars in two different films set within the same cinematic universe, "Life In A... Metro" (2007) and the newly released "Metro…In Dino". In an interview, Sharma expressed her reluctance to dwell on the comparisons, emphasizing that the characters and storylines are distinct.

"Life In A Metro," released almost two decades ago, featured Sharma and Khan as a younger couple, Shruti and Monty, dealing with the concerns of that stage in life. "Metro…In Dino," on the other hand, presents Sharma and Tripathi as an older, married couple with children, navigating the complexities of a long-term relationship, jobs, EMIs, and responsibilities. Sharma hinted that their story explores the theme of a marriage that, while good, is facing the challenge of becoming monotonous.

Sharma stated that comparisons are inevitable but that she doesn't want to think about it. She যুক্তি that if they were playing the same characters, then comparisons would be valid. However, she reiterated that "it's a very fresh thing. It's very new".

Interestingly, the name "Monty" is a point of connection between the two films. Sharma revealed that she was the one who suggested the name Monty for Irrfan Khan's character in the first film, finding it fitting for his quirky and goofy persona. When Pankaj Tripathi's character in "Metro…In Dino" was initially named Debu, Sharma proposed that they rename him Monty. She praised director Anurag Basu's openness and collaborative spirit, noting that he readily agreed to the change. She likened Basu's collaborative style to that of Rituparno Ghosh, both being "fun-loving Bengalis" who are relaxed and easygoing in their approach to filmmaking.

Sharma highlighted that "Metro…In Dino" offers a relatable portrayal of love in its various forms, appealing to different age groups and life stages. She suggested that viewers in their 40s with children will connect with her and Tripathi's story, while those in their 20s might find resonance with the characters played by Sara Ali Khan and Aditya Roy Kapur. She emphasized that the film isn't intended to convey a specific moral message about love but rather to reflect the universal experiences and challenges that people encounter in relationships.

Konkona Sen Sharma is the only actor from the original "Life In A... Metro" to return for this spiritual sequel. She has previously stated that Irrfan Khan's absence from the new film "broke her heart".

Pankaj Tripathi himself has addressed the comparisons to Irrfan Khan, acknowledging Khan's seniority and expressing his admiration for him. Tripathi stated that "Such comparison should never happen. He was my senior and I will always be his fan". He also mentioned that they both attended the same drama school and that he has always learned from Khan's craft. Tripathi concluded by affirming Irrfan Khan's lasting place in the hearts of many.
