Dharamshala, the heart of the Tibetan exile community, was alive with celebrations on Sunday, July 6, 2025, as the Dalai Lama marked his 90th birthday. Thousands of devoted followers, monks, nuns, dignitaries, and well-wishers flocked to the Himalayan town to partake in the festivities and pay their respects to the spiritual leader.

The main event was held at the Tsuglagkhang Temple complex, where a packed audience braved the incessant rain to catch a glimpse of the Dalai Lama. Dressed in a traditional robe and flowing yellow wrap, he was escorted to the temple courtyard amidst the sounds of Tibetan drums, bagpipes, and cymbals played by senior Lamas. The head of the Tibetan government-in-exile, Penpa Tsering, raised the Tibetan flag as musicians played the Tibetan anthem.

Throughout the week-long celebration, the Dalai Lama addressed various topics, including his reincarnation. He stated his intention to reincarnate after his death, putting an end to years of speculation. He also emphasized that the next Dalai Lama should be recognized per Buddhist traditions and born in the "free world" outside of China.

The celebrations were not just a religious affair but also a display of Tibetan culture and unity. Traditional dances and musical performances entertained the guests, while monks offered special prayers for the Dalai Lama's long life and good health.

A host of VIPs attended the celebrations, including Hollywood actor Richard Gere, a long-time supporter of the Tibetan cause. Gere expressed his admiration for the Dalai Lama, calling him "the most extraordinary man to ever walk on this planet". Indian political leaders also gathered in Dharamshala to honor the Dalai Lama's legacy of peace, non-violence, and compassion. Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh represented the Indian government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his warm wishes to the Dalai Lama, lauding him as an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience, and moral discipline. Messages also poured in from other global leaders, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former US presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

The Dalai Lama used the occasion to reiterate his lifelong commitments to promoting human values, religious harmony, Indian philosophical wisdom, and the preservation of Tibetan culture. He expressed gratitude to all who celebrated his birthday by promoting kindness and compassion. "While it is important to work for material development, it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and being compassionate toward everyone," he said.

Amidst the celebrations, the political undertones were palpable. China, which views the Dalai Lama as a separatist, has insisted that it alone has the authority to approve the next spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. This stance has been criticized by many, including Indian leaders who attended the Dharamshala event.

Despite the political challenges, the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday celebrations served as a powerful reminder of his enduring influence and the resilience of the Tibetan community in exile. The event was a testament to his message of peace, unity, and compassion, which continues to inspire millions around the world.
