South Africa coach prioritizes respect for legends over Mulder's potential record-breaking 400 score.

Wiaan Mulder's recent declaration at 367 not out in the second Test against Zimbabwe has sparked widespread discussion in the cricket world. Just 33 runs short of Brian Lara's all-time record of 400, Mulder opted to prioritize the team's needs and declare the innings, a decision that has been both praised and questioned.

Mulder, the stand-in captain for the series, revealed that his decision was influenced by a conversation with South Africa's coach, Shukri Conrad. According to Mulder, Conrad advised him to allow the legends to keep their records. Mulder explained, "I was speaking to Shuks (Proteas coach Shukri Conrad) and he kind of said to me as well, 'Let the legends keep the really big scores.' You never know what my fate is or what is destined for me. But Brian Lara keeping that record is exactly the way it should be".

Mulder also stated that he believed the team had already scored enough runs and needed to start bowling at the opposition. "First, I thought we have enough and we need to bowl," Mulder told broadcaster SuperSport. "Secondly, Brian Lara is a legend, he got 400 against England and for someone of that stature to keep that record is pretty special. If I get the chance again I'd probably do the same thing".

Conrad praised Mulder's performance, describing his innings as "nothing short of extraordinary". He lauded Mulder's composure, control, and the way he constructed his innings.

Mulder's innings was record-breaking in its own right. He surpassed Hashim Amla's previous record of 311* to become the highest-scoring South African in a Test innings. His score is also the highest ever Test score by a South African batter in an away match, breaking Hanif Mohammad's record. Furthermore, Mulder now holds the record for the highest Test score by a South African captain, surpassing Graeme Smith. At 27 years and 138 days, Mulder is also the youngest Test captain to score a triple-hundred.

Mulder's 297-ball triple century is the second-fastest in Test history, behind Virender Sehwag's 278-ball triple century against South Africa in 2008. During his innings, Mulder entertained himself by repeatedly singing "Zombie" by The Cranberries to stay focused.

Despite missing out on Lara's record, Mulder's contribution significantly boosted South Africa's position in the match. Following the declaration, South Africa bowled out Zimbabwe for 170 and enforced the follow-on.

While some felt Mulder should have pursued the record, his decision to prioritize the team and respect Lara's legacy has resonated with many. Mulder's own words reflect this sentiment: "You never know what is destined for me, but Brian Lara keeping that record (of the highest score in Tests) is exactly the way it should be".
