A portion of the Gambhira Bridge in Gujarat's Vadodara district collapsed early Wednesday morning, causing multiple vehicles to plunge into the Mahisagar River. The bridge, which connected Anand and Vadodara, experienced a sudden and catastrophic failure at approximately 7:30 AM, severing a crucial transportation link.
The incident involved several vehicles, including trucks, cars, and a tanker, which fell into the river below as the bridge gave way. Initial reports indicated that at least four vehicles were involved. As of the latest updates, three people have been confirmed dead, and four others have been rescued. Rescue operations are still underway, with authorities working to determine if more people are trapped in the wreckage.
The collapse has disrupted travel between central Gujarat and Saurashtra, impacting the districts of Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, and Ankleshwar. The Gambhira Bridge was a vital artery for regional transport and commerce, and its failure has caused significant disruption.
Local residents had previously raised concerns about the bridge's deteriorating condition. They reported that the bridge had been in a state of disrepair for a long time and had requested repairs. According to them, their warnings went unheeded.
The collapse has prompted investigations into possible administrative negligence, focusing on why the bridge was not repaired or replaced despite repeated warnings. Authorities are on the scene, and rescue efforts are ongoing.
