A pall of grief and suspicion has descended upon Bedouli village in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, following the tragic drowning of four children from the same family in a water-filled pit. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday and came to light on Wednesday, has triggered a wave of sorrow and raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The deceased, identified as Vaishnavi (3), Hunar (5), Kanha (5), and Khesari (5), belonged to a local tribe and were reportedly playing near their homes when they went missing around 7 pm on Tuesday. After the children went missing, a frantic search operation was launched. The search continued into Wednesday morning, ultimately leading to the discovery of their bodies in a water-filled pit located in a field where soil had been excavated previously.
The discovery of the bodies has been met with an outpouring of grief, with villagers and family members expressing their shock and devastation. While initial reports suggest the cause of death to be drowning, the presence of injury marks on the faces of the deceased has fueled suspicions of foul play. Some family members have alleged the possibility of murder, prompting the police to investigate all angles, including both accidental drowning and foul play.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Meja), SP Upadhyay, confirmed that the police are taking the concerns of the family seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation. The bodies have been sent to SRN Hospital for postmortem examination, and further legal proceedings will be initiated based on the report. The police have stated that they are awaiting the postmortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death and determine whether any foul play was involved.
The tragic incident has drawn the attention of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who expressed his condolences to the bereaved families. In a statement, the Chief Minister conveyed his deepest sympathies and directed officials to ensure immediate disbursement of financial assistance to the families of the victims.
The incident has also brought into focus the safety of children in rural areas, particularly near excavation sites and water bodies. There have been previous incidents of drownings in Prayagraj. Local authorities are being urged to take proactive measures to prevent such tragedies, including fencing off dangerous areas and raising awareness among parents and children about the risks associated with playing near water.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the loss of the young lives and seeking answers to the questions surrounding their deaths. The police have assured the public that they are committed to conducting a fair and impartial investigation to bring clarity to the tragic event and provide closure to the grieving families.
