The Madhya Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) is under scrutiny following concerns over the "faulty design" of newly constructed bridges in the state. Recent events have triggered investigations and disciplinary actions, highlighting potential lapses in planning and execution.
One prominent case involves a rail over-bridge (ROB) in Bhopal's Aishbagh area, which has drawn criticism for its unusual 90-degree turn. The design has been widely ridiculed by residents and online users, who question how vehicles will safely navigate the sharp turn. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav acknowledged the serious negligence in the bridge's construction and promptly ordered an inquiry.
As a result of the inquiry, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken stringent action against eight engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD). Seven engineers, including two chief engineers, have been suspended with immediate effect. Additionally, a departmental probe has been initiated against a retired superintendent engineer. The government has also blacklisted the construction agency and design consultant involved in the project.
PWD officials have cited land shortages and the presence of a metro rail station nearby as factors contributing to the design. They suggested that acquiring additional land could allow for converting the sharp turn into a curve. However, this explanation has not quelled public concern regarding safety and practicality. Chief Minister Yadav has stated that the ROB will not be inaugurated until necessary improvements are made. A committee has been formed to oversee these improvements.
In a separate incident, a portion of an under-construction overbridge in Shivpuri district collapsed, injuring six laborers. The Madhya Pradesh Public Works Department (MPPWD) had contracted Subham Construction for the bridge construction. According to a company official, the collapse was attributed to a technical fault, specifically excessive vibration beyond permissible limits, which caused the structure to become unstable. Police have issued a notice to the construction agency, and a technical investigation is underway to determine further legal action.
These incidents have raised broader questions about construction quality, design oversight, and accountability within the Madhya Pradesh Public Works Department. The state government is under pressure to ensure that infrastructure projects are executed safely and efficiently, and that those responsible for lapses are held accountable. Public safety and convenience remain paramount as the government addresses these concerns and works to rectify the identified issues.
