England ended the first day of the third Test against India at Lord's in a potentially strong position, but with concerns mounting over a possible injury to captain Ben Stokes. Joe Root's masterful, unbeaten 99 anchored the innings, helping the hosts recover from a shaky start to reach 251-4 at the close of play.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, England's innings was immediately put under pressure by Indian seamer Nitish Kumar Reddy, who struck twice in his first over, removing openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley. Duckett was caught down the leg side by Rishabh Pant for 23, while Crawley edged a superb delivery from Reddy to Pant for 18, leaving England struggling at 44-2.
Root, however, joined by Ollie Pope, began a much-needed recovery. The pair compiled a partnership of 109 runs, blunting the Indian attack for a significant period. Pope eventually fell for 44, caught behind off Ravindra Jadeja shortly after tea. Jasprit Bumrah then struck a further blow, dismissing Harry Brook for 11 with an inswinging delivery that crashed into the stumps, leaving England at 172-4.
Root found another resolute partner in captain Ben Stokes, and together they rebuilt the innings once more. Their unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 79 runs steadied the ship, with Root displaying hisclass and experience. Root's innings, comprising watchful defense and selective aggression, frustrated the Indian bowlers. He reached the close of play one run short of his century, leaving the match intriguingly poised.
However, concerns arose late in the day as Stokes appeared to be struggling with a groin issue. He required treatment from the physio and looked uncomfortable while running between the wickets. Stokes's injury is a significant worry for England, given his importance to the team as a batter, bowler, and captain. The extent of the injury is yet to be determined, but it could impact his ability to contribute fully in the remainder of the match.
Earlier in the day, Rishabh Pant was also struck on his left index finger and received medical attention.
The series is currently level at 1-1, with India having won the second Test by a convincing margin after England triumphed in the first.
