Following a shooting incident at Kapil Sharma's newly opened Kap's Café in Surrey, British Columbia, the establishment has vowed to remain resilient against violence. The incident occurred late Wednesday night, with police responding to reports of shots fired at approximately 1:50 a.m..

According to the Surrey Police Service (SPS), upon arrival, officers found that shots had been fired toward the business, resulting in property damage while staff members were inside. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The café is located in the 8400 block of 120 Street, on the border of Surrey and North Delta. Several bullet holes were visible in the café's windows, along with a shattered window.

The SPS's Frontline Investigative Support (FLIS) Team is currently leading the investigation, exploring potential connections to other incidents and motives. As of now, police have not released any suspect information. Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton stated that the motive for the shooting has not yet been determined.

Harjit Singh Laddi, an operative of the banned terror group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), has claimed responsibility for the attack in a social media post. Laddi, who is also listed as one of India's most wanted men by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), cited anger over remarks allegedly made by Kapil Sharma about Nihangs as the motive behind the shooting. According to sources close to Kapil Sharma, the restaurant and the building that were fired upon were owned by a different individual. In his social media post, Laddi stated that a character on Kapil Sharma's comedy show made humorous remarks about the dress or behavior of Nihang Sikhs and that their calls to Sharma's manager were ignored. Probe revealed that Laddi's aide Manish had arranged youngsters involved in drug peddling and other petty crimes to execute the attack.

The shooting has prompted concern within the local community. One resident, Maninderdeep Kaur, expressed anxiety, stating that it's unsettling to live in such an environment. Another resident, Sharin Whitty, conveyed her disappointment, noting the community's excitement about the café's opening and Kapil Sharma's prominence as an artist, particularly within the Punjabi community.

Kapil Sharma, known for his long-running comedy show, launched Kap's Café just last weekend with his wife, Ginni Chatrath. The incident follows a series of extortion attempts targeting business owners in Surrey. Earlier this month, the RCMP charged two individuals with gun and arson offenses related to these extortion attempts. Victims had reported receiving threats demanding large sums of money, followed by violence or property damage when demands were unmet.

The investigation is ongoing, with police examining possible links to recent extortion incidents. The Vancouver Sun reported that the police do not have a description of the suspect yet and the motive for the shooting has not been determined.
