External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has recently reaffirmed India's commitment to a fair and multipolar global order, emphasizing that it should not be dominated by a few nations. His statement comes amidst increasing global trade tensions, including threats of tariffs from the United States and pressure on India's oil trade with Russia.
Speaking at the BIMSTEC Traditional Music Festival in Delhi, titled "SaptaSur: Seven Nations, One Melody," Jaishankar connected cultural traditions to the broader vision of global balance. He stated that "We live in complicated and uncertain times. Our collective desire is to see a fair and representative global order, not one dominated by a few. That quest is often articulated as political or economic rebalancing". He also highlighted that respect and dignity for societies can be achieved through cultural progress, particularly through cultural traditions, which define identity.
Jaishankar's remarks underscore India's focus on its national interests and its commitment to its long-standing relationship with Russia. Despite pressure from the US and the European Union, India has maintained its oil imports from Russia, emphasizing that its energy security and national interests are of utmost importance. This position aligns with the principles of the BRICS alliance, which advocates for a multipolar world order.
The Indian government has refuted claims that it has stopped buying oil from Russia. Government sources have clarified that no decision has been taken to halt Russian oil imports, as the country continues to prioritize its energy security and national interests while maintaining trade relations with Russia.
Jaishankar's emphasis on sovereignty, tradition, and multipolarity reflects India's current diplomatic stance in the face of global challenges. He highlighted that music serves as a bridge between nations and a powerful expression of their heritage and identity. By promoting cultural exchange and understanding, India aims to strengthen its relationships with other nations and foster a more balanced global order.
The US is expected to impose maximum sanctions on Russia in the coming days, potentially affecting countries involved in secondary trade. However, India remains committed to its independent decision-making ability and its pursuit of a multipolar world, where no single nation dominates.
