In a poignant and unprecedented move, Liverpool Football Club has announced the retirement of the No. 20 shirt in honor of Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident last week. The decision marks the first time in the club's history that a squad number has been retired as a tribute to a player, underscoring the profound impact Jota had on the team, its supporters, and the entire Liverpool community.

Jota, 28, and his brother, Andre Silva, died in a car crash in Spain on July 3, 2025, as the player was returning to Merseyside for pre-season training. The news sent shockwaves through the football world, with tributes pouring in from teammates, coaches, fans, and rival clubs. Liverpool's decision to retire his number is a testament to the high regard in which he was held at Anfield.

The retirement of the No. 20 shirt will be effective across all levels of the club, including the men's senior team, the women's team, the U21s, and the academy. This ensures that Jota's legacy will be remembered and honored by all future generations of Liverpool players. The club consulted with Jota's wife, Rute, and his family before making the decision, ensuring that it was a fitting tribute to his memory.

Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football, emphasized the significance of the decision, stating, "As a club, we were all acutely aware of the sentiment of our supporters – and we felt exactly the same way". He added, "It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo's wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention". Edwards further noted that this is a "unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person" and that "by retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten".

Diogo Jota joined Liverpool in September 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers. During his five seasons at Anfield, he made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals, quickly becoming a fan favorite for his work rate, versatility, and eye for goal. He played a crucial role in Liverpool's successes, including winning the Premier League title in 2025, the FA Cup in 2022, and two League Cups. He was also a key member of the team that reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2022.

Jota's impact extended beyond the pitch. He was known for his positive attitude, his dedication to the team, and his strong connection with the fans. His teammates and coaches often praised his professionalism and his willingness to contribute in any way possible.

The Portuguese international was the ninth player to wear the No. 20 shirt for Liverpool, following in the footsteps of players such as Stig Inge Bjornebye, Nicky Barmby, Javier Mascherano and Adam Lallana. However, Jota's contributions and his tragic passing have elevated the number to a new level of significance at the club.

Liverpool has planned a special tribute to Diogo Jota ahead of their upcoming fixture against Preston, allowing fans and players to pay their respects to a player who will forever be remembered as a true Red. The retirement of his No. 20 shirt ensures that his legacy will live on at Anfield for generations to come.
