A recent incident at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta has sparked controversy and raised concerns about campus safety. A female student has filed a police report alleging rape by a fellow student within the institution's hostel. According to the FIR lodged at Haridevpur Police Station, the woman claims she was drugged during a counseling session and subsequently sexually assaulted. Police have arrested the accused, a second-year IIM-C student, and an investigation is currently underway.
According to police sources, the victim stated that she was called to the hostel for a counseling session. She then became unconscious after consuming a drink laced with drugs at the hostel. The woman realized she had been raped after regaining consciousness. She also alleged that the accused had threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone. The accused student was detained and then formally arrested.
The incident has drawn comparisons to a recent gang-rape case at a law college in Kolkata. In that case, a 24-year-old first-year law student was allegedly gang-raped on June 25th, allegedly by a former student and two seniors on the college premises. This earlier incident triggered widespread outrage and demands for a central agency probe.
IIM-Calcutta authorities have acknowledged the incident and stated that they are cooperating with the police investigation. Saibal Chattopadhyay, Director-in-Charge of IIM-C, stated that he could not comment on the situation but that the incident is being investigated by the police.
Initial reports indicate the victim was an outsider who was not allowed to sign the visitor's book upon entering the hostel. She reportedly lost consciousness after consuming pizza and water, which allegedly contained a sedative. She claims she was assaulted when she resisted. The victim initially approached Thakurpukur police station before being directed to Haridevpur police station, which has jurisdiction over IIM-C.
The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of safety measures on educational campuses and the handling of sexual assault allegations. The investigation is ongoing.
