Following a dominant 6-1 victory over Wales, England's Lionesses have secured their place in the Euro 2025 quarter-finals, setting up a highly anticipated clash with Sweden. The defending champions showcased their attacking prowess in their final Group D match, overcoming a slow start to the tournament and demonstrating the "urgency" that manager Sarina Wiegman had been seeking.

The Lionesses' path to the quarter-finals wasn't without its challenges. They started their Euro 2025 campaign with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to France. However, the team responded emphatically, with a 4-0 thrashing of the Netherlands. This victory was followed by an equally impressive 6-1 demolition of Wales, securing their spot as runners-up in Group D behind France.

The match against Wales was a showcase of England's attacking depth, with six different players finding the net. Georgia Stanway opened the scoring with a penalty, followed by goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo, Beth Mead, and Aggie Beever-Jones. Wiegman was particularly pleased with her team's overall performance, stating that they "dominated big parts of the game".

Looking ahead to the quarter-final clash with Sweden, Wiegman acknowledges the challenges her team will face. "They're always very powerful," Wiegman said of the Swedish side. "They have speed up front on the counterattack. They are a hard team to beat and have done well in the group". Sweden finished top of Group C, winning all their group games, including a 4-1 thrashing of Germany.

England and Sweden have a history in the Women's Euros. Most recently, the two teams played out a goalless draw in the qualifying round last year. However, the Lionesses also have fond memories of their Scandinavian opponents, having defeated them 4-0 in the semi-finals of Euro 2022 en route to winning the title on home soil.

The quarter-final match is scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 17th, in Zurich. Zurich is where the Lionesses lost to France but defeated the Netherlands. It's also where Sweden won against Germany. The winner of the match will advance to the semi-finals to face either Norway or Italy. With a potentially easier path to the final now that they are on the opposite side of the bracket as Spain, the Lionesses will be hoping to continue their winning momentum and defend their European crown.
