The body of Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old Delhi University (DU) student from Tripura who had been missing since July 7th, was found in the Yamuna River on Sunday, July 13th. Debnath's body was recovered near the Geeta Colony flyover, approximately 10 kilometers downstream from the Signature Bridge, her last known location.
Debnath was a second-year B.Sc. Mathematics student at DU's Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College. She resided in the Paryavaran Complex area of South Delhi with her family, who have been living in Delhi for many years and are originally from Sabroom’s Bhuratali village in South Tripura district.
According to police reports, Sneha Debnath went missing on July 7th. On the morning of her disappearance, she informed her mother that she was going to drop her friend, Pitunia, at Sarai Rohilla Railway Station. She hired a cab around 5:15 a.m.. However, when her family attempted to contact her around 8:45 a.m., her phone was switched off. Upon contacting Pitunia, the family discovered that Sneha never met her that morning. The cab driver confirmed that he had dropped Sneha off at the Signature Bridge in Wazirabad.
A search operation was launched by the Delhi Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), focusing on the area between Nigam Bodh Ghat and Noida. Police used technical surveillance to trace Debnath's movements and confirmed her last known location as the Signature Bridge. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a girl matching her description on the bridge.
Authorities found a handwritten note indicating Debnath's intent to die by suicide. Police sources indicated that her distress was likely linked to personal or family-related issues, and she was not upset about her studies. Close friends of Debnath told investigators that she had been disturbed and emotionally distressed in the months leading up to her disappearance and had sent them messages expressing her distress in the early hours of July 7th.
Following the recovery of her body, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of functional CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the Signature Bridge, a location known to be a high-risk area. Despite the bridge's busy nature, the only operational surveillance device is a speed detection camera that captures still images of speeding vehicles. The absence of comprehensive monitoring has drawn criticism regarding the security measures in place to safeguard public safety. The family stated that if the CCTV cameras on and around the Signature Bridge had been functional, they might have known what happened to their daughter.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha acknowledged Debnath's disappearance and directed the Delhi Police to take immediate action. He also expressed condolences to the bereaved family and instructed Tripura Bhawan, New Delhi, to coordinate with the Delhi administration for further formalities.
