In a shocking turn of events, an 80-year-old man in Haryana, India, who had been declared dead after being on a ventilator for four days, miraculously revived moments before his cremation. Darshan Singh Brar, a heart patient from Nising, near Karnal, was pronounced dead by doctors in Patiala. The family was transporting Brar's body home for the last rites when the unexpected occurred.
According to reports, the ambulance carrying Brar's body hit a pothole near Dhand village in Haryana's Kaithal district. The jolt from the pothole caused Brar's grandson, who was in the ambulance, to notice movement in his grandfather's hand. Amazed, he checked for a heartbeat and, sensing one, rushed the 80-year-old to a nearby hospital. Doctors at the hospital confirmed that Brar was alive and breathing. He was then referred to NP Rawal Hospital in Karnal for further treatment.
Dr. Netrapal from Rawal Hospital stated that when Brar was brought in, he was breathing and had blood pressure and a pulse. The doctor added, "We cannot say that the patient had died". He also mentioned that Brar was still critical and in the ICU, experiencing labored breathing due to a chest infection.
Balwan Singh, Brar's grandson, described the event as nothing short of a miracle. The family had already made arrangements for the funeral, including setting up a tent and arranging food for the mourners. Wood for the cremation had also been prepared. "It is God's grace that he is now breathing," Balwan said, expressing his hope for his grandfather's recovery.
This incident isn't the first of its kind in India. In November 2024, a 25-year-old man in Rajasthan, who was deaf and mute, woke up on his funeral pyre moments before being cremated. Doctors had declared him dead after he developed a fever and was taken to a district hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed that doctors had failed to conduct a mandatory postmortem before releasing the body for cremation. As a result, three doctors were suspended for gross misconduct and dereliction of duty.
These incidents raise serious questions about the procedures followed by medical professionals in declaring a person dead. It also highlights the need for greater diligence and adherence to protocols to prevent such distressing events from occurring. While Brar's condition remains critical, his story serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of hope, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable circumstances.
