A video showing a train passenger being assaulted after complaining about overcharging has gone viral, prompting swift action from Indian Railways. The incident occurred on the Hemkunt Express on May 7, 2025, and involved a passenger named Vishal Sharma, who runs a YouTube channel called 'Mr Vishal'.
Sharma was allegedly overcharged for a bottle of water. He was sold a bottle of "Wonder Aqua" for ₹20, even though the approved brand "Rail Neer" is supposed to be sold for ₹15. When he questioned the price and the brand, he was told that no other options were available. Sharma then filed a complaint using the RailMadad app. Shortly after, he received a call from railway authorities seeking more details. Hours later, pantry staff confronted and allegedly attacked him in his 3AC coach.
The video of the assault shows several men entering Sharma's compartment and confronting him while he was on his upper berth. Despite Sharma's repeated explanation that he had only complained about being overcharged, one of the men climbed up and physically attacked him. Sharma stated that he sustained injuries, his clothes were torn, and he was bleeding. In the video, Sharma is heard saying, "I had complained because you were overcharging for water". He later shared the video on YouTube and X (formerly Twitter), stating, "When I complained about overcharging in Train by Pantry, an attempt was made to kill me".
The video sparked widespread outrage on social media. Railway Seva, the official support handle of Indian Railways, responded promptly on X. They stated that the case was being taken with utmost seriousness. A penalty of ₹5 lakh has been imposed on the caterer, and an FIR has been lodged by GRP (Government Railway Police), Kathua. The matter remains under strict watch, and further action will be taken based on the investigation. IRCTC also responded, assuring that the matter has been escalated to the appropriate officials. A spokesperson confirmed that an investigation is underway.
Sharma got off the train at Kathua station and sought help from the local police, but claims they were unhelpful and did not register an FIR. He also expressed frustration with the railway helpline, saying he received no meaningful support. This isn't the first time Sharma has had issues on trains. He was previously involved in a dispute on the Begampura Express regarding overcharging for coffee.
The incident has reignited concerns about passenger safety, vendor accountability, and the handling of legitimate grievances on Indian trains. Ensuring passenger safety remains the paramount concern for Indian Railways during train journeys.
