The Patna police have released images of suspects in connection with the brazen shooting that occurred at Paras Hospital on Thursday, July 17, 2025. The incident involved five armed men storming the hospital and fatally shooting Chandan Mishra, a prisoner who was out on parole for medical treatment.
Chandan Mishra, a 36-year-old resident of Buxar district, was admitted to Paras Hospital for treatment when the attack occurred. Mishra was a known criminal with a history of involvement in numerous criminal cases, including more than 12 murder cases. He was serving a life sentence for the murder of a businessman, Rajendra Kumar. At the time of the shooting, Mishra was on parole from Beur Jail.
According to police sources, the five assailants, all carrying guns, entered Mishra's hospital room around 7:15 am and opened fire. The CCTV cameras at the hospital captured the five shooters pulling out their guns, opening the cabin's door, and then escaping. The gunmen fled the scene on motorcycles. Mishra sustained critical injuries and later died during treatment.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious questions about security arrangements at the hospital and the overall law and order situation in Bihar. Opposition parties have strongly criticized the Nitish Kumar government, alleging a breakdown of law and order in the state.
Patna police are working with Buxar police to identify the shooters. Police have identified all the accused and have detained six suspects in Patna and Buxar in connection with the incident. One of the suspects, Tausif Raja, was arrested from Phulwarisharif. Police investigation hinted at an old dispute among members of the Chandan Mishra gang. The assailants are believed to be members of a rival gang, possibly the Chandan Sheru gang. Police suspect the gunmen had carefully mapped the hospital's entry and exit routes in a well-planned manner, indicating possible involvement of accomplices in planning their escape. Several staff have been detained and are being questioned.
The police are reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital and surrounding areas to gather more information and identify the remaining suspects. A forensic team and a dog squad were also deployed to collect evidence from the crime scene. Authorities are also investigating the possibility of involvement by hospital security guards in the incident.
The incident has further intensified the political atmosphere in Bihar, especially with upcoming elections. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav questioned the government's ability to maintain law and order, while other leaders have demanded accountability and a thorough investigation into the matter.
