A second-year dental student at Sharda University in Greater Noida tragically took her own life in her hostel room on Friday night, alleging harassment by faculty members. The student, identified as Jyoti Sharma from Gurugram, was found hanging in her room in the girls' hostel. Police have arrested two teachers, Mahinder and Shairy, based on a suicide note where the student accused them of mental torture and humiliation.

In her suicide note, Jyoti wrote, "If I died, the teachers of PCP and Dental material are to blame. Mahinder Sir and Shairy Ma'am are responsible for my death. I want them to go behind the bars. They mentally harassed me. They humiliated me. I have been in stress because of them for a long time. I want them to face the same thing. I am sorry. I can't live like this anymore. I can't". She expressed that she had been suffering from mental harassment and humiliation for a long time and wanted the accused to face legal action.

Ramesh Jongda, the student's father, filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Knowledge Park police station, alleging that his daughter was "instigated to commit suicide by university faculty and was personally tortured by them, and evidence regarding her suicide was also destroyed". He demanded strict action against the university staff for "harassing" his daughter.

Following the incident, students of the university held protests demanding action against those responsible for her death. Some students alleged that Jyoti was stressed due to accusations of forging signatures. A minor scuffle reportedly broke out between protesters and police during the demonstration, and a video circulated showing family members confronting the head of the dentistry department.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) of Greater Noida, Sudhir Kumar, stated that tensions had escalated due to anger among the deceased's family and university students toward the university administration. He added, "There was anger among the deceased's family and university students against the university administration, which was resolved through dialogue by police officials. Peace has been restored at the scene, and further legal proceedings are ongoing". Police have registered a case under sections 108, 238, 79, 352, 351 (2) of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023.

Dr. Ajit Kumar, a Sharda University spokesperson, stated that a probe has been ordered into the matter and those involved have been suspended. "We have suspended those who were involved in this case and ordered an investigation. The report will be submitted within five days," Dr. Kumar said. The university administration has assured full cooperation with the authorities and has formed a high-level committee to investigate the death.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the university campus, especially within the hostel premises. The university has stated that it is fully cooperating with statutory authorities in their processes and has extended all required documentation and access.
