The Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced today with solemn tributes to the victims of the recent Air India AI-171 plane crash and the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Both houses of Parliament observed a moment of silence to honor those who lost their lives in these tragic events. Leaders from across party lines expressed their condolences and stood in solidarity with the bereaved families.
The session is expected to be a busy one, with the government aiming to push forward with several key legislative items. However, the opposition is gearing up to challenge the government on various issues, including the Air India crash, the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor, and the Bihar voter list revision.
The Air India AI-171 crash, which resulted in the loss of 260 lives, is expected to be a major point of contention. Reports blaming pilot error for the accident are likely to be questioned. The opposition is also expected to raise concerns about aviation safety standards and the audits conducted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
In addition to the Air India crash, the opposition is also likely to press the government on Operation Sindoor, especially in light of United States President Donald Trump's claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during the operation.
The session began with tributes to the deceased, but normal proceedings were quickly disrupted as the opposition raised concerns about Operation Sindoor. Lok Sabha was adjourned until noon due to the uproar. Speaker Om Birla stated that the issue would be discussed after the Question Hour and urged members to allow the House to function smoothly. BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal echoed this sentiment, asserting the government's readiness to address all queries if the House is allowed to function without disruptions.
Several members of parliament have already signaled their intention to raise specific issues during the session. Congress MP Randeep Surjewala submitted a notice seeking a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. BJD MP Sasmit Patra indicated that he would raise concerns about the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Odisha.
Despite the anticipated disruptions, the government has expressed its willingness to engage in discussions on all issues raised by the opposition. With a substantial legislative agenda and a determined opposition, the Monsoon Session is expected to be eventful.
