Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President of India on Monday came as a surprise, shortly after he addressed the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon session of Parliament. Citing health reasons, Dhankhar stated he was stepping down to "prioritise health care" and follow "medical advice," effective immediately. His resignation letter, addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, expressed his gratitude for her support and the "soothing, wonderful working relationship" they shared. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers, acknowledging their "invaluable" support.
Earlier in the day, before submitting his resignation, Dhankhar presided over the Rajya Sabha and raised several important issues. One significant matter was a notice for a motion to remove a High Court judge, Justice Yashwant Varma. Dhankhar informed the House that the motion, signed by over 50 members of the Council of States, met the necessary numerical requirements. He outlined the technical procedure involved in such cases, emphasizing the constitutional requirement regarding the presentation of motions in one or both Houses of Parliament on the same day. He directed the Secretary-General to verify if a similar motion had been moved in the Lok Sabha, and the Law Minister confirmed that over 100 members had submitted such a motion there as well.
Dhankhar also administered the oath to newly elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and presided over the business advisory committee meeting. Furthermore, he was scheduled to visit Jaipur on Wednesday in his capacity as Vice President.
Dhankhar's decision to resign, just two years before his term was to end, followed a day of surprising developments in the Rajya Sabha. His resignation letter invoked Article 67(a) of the Constitution. The resignation has sparked varied reactions, with some expressing shock and others acknowledging his stated health concerns. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the resignation was "totally unexpected" and that "there is far more to it than meets the eye". However, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal hailed him as a patriot and said that since he had cited health reasons for his decision, it should be accepted.
Dhankhar had faced health-related issues in recent months, including a hospital admission to AIIMS in March for cardiac-related ailments. He was discharged after making a satisfactory recovery. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar expressed deep thankfulness for the invaluable experiences and insights he gained as Vice President, noting it was a privilege to witness India's economic progress during his tenure. He also conveyed his pride in India's global rise and confidence in its future.
Jagdeep Dhankhar's tenure as Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman was marked by both achievements and disagreements. He had several instances of differing opinions with opposition MPs.
