Ameesha Patel has responded to the comparisons being drawn between the recent film Saiyaara and her debut film, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (KNPH). Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, released in 2000, was a major commercial success and launched the careers of both Patel and Hrithik Roshan.
In a recent interview, Patel addressed the buzz surrounding Saiyaara, a romantic drama featuring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. The film has generated considerable interest, with many drawing parallels to the impact and success of Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai.
Patel acknowledged the comparisons, stating that it took 25 years for another debut romantic film to be compared to Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, which has become a benchmark. She expressed gratitude for KNPH's enduring legacy and wished the Saiyaara couple the best.
"I am very grateful that Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai is the benchmark that's been, you know, compared to," she said. She added, "I wish them the best of luck, and I hope that aage jaake bhi yeh couple Gadar macha de". Gadar, referring to her film Gadar 2, suggests that she hopes Saiyaara achieves similar box office success.
However, Patel also noted that she had not yet seen Saiyaara and could not comment on the validity of the comparisons. She emphasized that she needed to watch the film before offering a substantive opinion. She also acknowledged that some fans might not appreciate the comparison due to Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai's cult status and strong fan base.
Saiyaara, directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Yash Raj Films, was released on July 18, 2025. The film stars Ahaan Panday as Krish Kapoor, a musician, and Aneet Padda as Vaani Batra, a journalist and poet diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. The storyline revolves around their evolving relationship, highlighting their love and the challenges posed by Vaani's condition.
Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai also had a re-release in cinemas on January 10, 2025, celebrating its 25th anniversary. The film's re-release allowed fans to relive the charm of Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel's debut performance.
Patel's reaction reflects a mix of humility and pride. She acknowledges the remarkable impact of Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai while also expressing support for the new talent in Saiyaara. While she refrained from making a direct comparison without seeing the film, her words suggest that she appreciates the fact that Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai continues to be a standard against which new romantic films are measured.
