The Rajya Sabha is set to hold a debate on "Operation Sindoor" next week, with a total of 9 hours allotted for discussion. This follows demands from the opposition for a detailed discussion on the matter. The Lok Sabha will allocate 16 hours for the same discussion. The debate in the Rajya Sabha is scheduled for July 29.
The decision to hold the debate was finalized after a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC). Initially, there were disruptions in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as opposition members protested and demanded a discussion on Operation Sindoor and other issues. The proceedings in both houses were adjourned due to the uproar.
BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya moved a motion urging the government to establish a permanent Parliamentary mechanism to support international engagement during national security operations, drawing from the model of multi-party delegations sent abroad. The motion emphasizes that Operation Sindoor represents a "defining chapter" in India's strategic history, characterized by military precision, coordination, and the swift achievement of objectives while minimizing harm to civilians. It also asserts that the operation successfully neutralized key national security threats and conveyed a strong message of India's resolve. The motion further notes that Operation Sindoor has significantly bolstered public confidence, fostered national unity, and elevated India's military stature globally through professional conduct and adherence to international norms.
The motion also "urges the government to institutionalize the model of coordinated Parliamentary diplomacy and strategic operations, and to establish a permanent parliamentary advisory mechanism under the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Defence to support international engagement during such national security operations".
The opposition has been demanding a discussion on Operation Sindoor since the beginning of the Monsoon session, with some insisting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi be present to reply. The agreement for the debate to occur next week was reached in part because PM Modi will be away on a two-nation trip until the weekend.
Operation Sindoor, described by Prime Minister Modi as a "Vijay Utsav" (victory celebration) for the nation, has been hailed as a testament to the strength and precision of the Indian Armed Forces.
