The brazen daylight murder of gangster Chandan Mishra inside Patna's Paras Hospital on July 17, 2025, involved the firing of 28 rounds, according to police sources. The prime accused, Tauseef alias Badshah, altered his appearance in an attempt to evade arrest following the high-profile crime.
Chandan Mishra, a 36-year-old criminal with a history of 24 criminal cases, including more than a dozen murders, was out on parole for medical treatment when he was gunned down. Five armed men stormed into the hospital, making their way to ICU Room 209 where Mishra was recovering from liver surgery under police custody. The assailants opened fire, striking Mishra at least five times, also injuring two of his aides. CCTV footage captured the chilling scene, showing the men calmly walking through the hospital corridors, even loading their weapons before reaching the ICU. After the shooting, one of the attackers was seen waving his gun.
The murder is believed to be the result of a gang war, allegedly orchestrated by Sheru Singh, a former associate of Mishra who is currently incarcerated in Purulia jail. Tauseef, who had reportedly lost a significant amount of money in gambling and was facing financial difficulties, allegedly took on the contract killing. Each shooter was promised ₹5 lakh for the hit.
Following the incident, Tauseef attempted to disguise himself by getting a haircut and shaving his beard. However, the police were able to track him down, along with his cousin Nishu Khan and their associates. All five accused were eventually arrested in Kolkata. They had changed their SIM cards and moved through different states in an attempt to avoid capture, but the police were able to track them through call records and CCTV footage.
In addition to the initial arrests, two more suspects, Balwant Kumar Singh (22) and Raviranjan Kumar Singh (20), were apprehended after a gunfight with the Special Task Force (STF) in Bhojpur district. Both sustained bullet injuries during the encounter and were taken to the hospital. A third suspect, Abhishek Kumar, was also arrested at the scene. During interrogation, the suspects revealed their involvement in Mishra's murder. Police recovered three country-made guns, two magazines, and four live cartridges from the accused.
The incident has raised serious questions about security protocols at hospitals in Bihar. The ease with which the assailants were able to enter the hospital and carry out the attack has led to scrutiny of the security measures in place. Police suspect security lapses and the possible involvement of security personnel in aiding the accused. Following the murder, police held a meeting with hospital representatives to review security arrangements and issue instructions for improvement, including the installation of metal detectors and high-resolution CCTV cameras. Hospitals have also been urged to increase CCTV coverage to include roads and to establish control rooms to monitor activity.
The Patna police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. Authorities are investigating how the assailants managed to reach Mishra's room despite the presence of checkpoints at the hospital. The incident has also sparked political reactions, with opposition leaders criticizing the law and order situation in Bihar.
