Following the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's recent order to block 25 OTT platforms for disseminating content deemed obscene, vulgar, and pornographic, actress and politician Kangana Ranaut has voiced her strong support for the ban. Ranaut stated that this move is essential to protect Indian culture and the minds of the youth.
The Ministry's decision came after several OTT platforms, including Ullu, ALTT, Big Shots App, NeonX VIP, and Desiflix, were found to be in violation of Indian law. These platforms were allegedly disseminating content that included graphic sexual innuendos, extensive nudity, and pornographic visuals. Some content also depicted what authorities considered inappropriate sexual situations involving family relationships. In total, 14 mobile applications and 26 websites have been ordered to be disabled by intermediaries under the provisions of the IT Act, 2000, and the IT Rules, 2021. The government has directed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to disable public access to these platforms.
Kangana Ranaut, now a BJP MP from Mandi, told ANI news agency that the ban was crucial to prevent the corruption of the country's culture and the minds of young people. She added, "It is important to see that our society is not headed toward a complete downfall. It was awaited for a long time". Ranaut also appreciated the action taken against the illegal functioning of these OTT applications. Speaking to IANS, Ranaut said that the move was crucial to preserve the country's culture and future generations, adding that the action against these apps, especially the illegal ones, is highly appreciated.
Echoing Ranaut's sentiments, actor Ravi Kishan also welcomed the ban, emphasizing that "boundaries and limits need to be set". Kishan told ANI that the government's decision was important in regards to India's culture and that licensed and unlicensed OTT platforms have been making soft porn and obscene films. He stated, "This is indeed a great decision. There is a 'Laxman Rekha' for entertainment".
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's action follows prior warnings and advisories issued to these platforms in September 2024, urging them to adhere to India's laws and ethical guidelines. The Ministry stated that the banned platforms violated several provisions of Indian law, including Section 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
The list of 25 banned OTT platforms includes Big Shots App, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix, and Triflicks.
Ekta Kapoor has clarified that neither she nor her mother, Shobha Kapoor, are associated with ALTT in any capacity.
