The Delhi High Court is currently reviewing challenges to the Central government's approval for the release of the film "Udaipur Files - Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder". During a hearing on Monday, July 28, 2025, the court was informed that the film's producers have submitted an application to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for re-certification. This application is expected to be considered soon.
The film has faced significant controversy and legal challenges. It is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, who was allegedly killed for supporting Nupur Sharma on social media. The film's release was initially stayed by the Delhi High Court due to concerns about communal disharmony.
The Central government has recommended six major changes to the film. These include replacing the name of a key character, altering an AI-generated execution scene, and deleting sensitive dialogues. The government also directed filmmakers to revise the disclaimer, remove credit frames thanking specific individuals, and remove all mentions of the character "Nutan Sharma," including replacing the name and deleting dialogue referencing religious texts. Certain dialogues about the Balochi community have also been flagged for deletion.
The Supreme Court has declined to extend the stay on the film's release and directed petitioners to approach the Delhi High Court. The Delhi High Court has scheduled a hearing for July 30, 2025, to further consider the matter. The court has made it clear that the film cannot be exhibited until the CBFC issues the revised certificate.
Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, representing the CBFC, confirmed that the film had been approved with six cuts, but the formal certificate was still pending. The Bench made it clear that the film cannot be exhibited until the CBFC issues the revised certificate.
The film's director, Bharat Srinet, announced that the film will now be released in theaters on August 8, 2025. However, this release date is contingent on the CBFC issuing the re-certification and the Delhi High Court resolving the legal challenges.
Amid the ongoing controversy and threats, the film's producer, Amit Jani, has been provided with Y-category security. This security detail includes 11 personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and will cover Jani's movements within Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The Supreme Court had previously allowed the producer, director, and Kanhaiya Lal's son to seek police protection.
The "Udaipur Files" has faced numerous delays due to censorship and legal hurdles. The film features Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiya Lal.
