A video has gone viral showing a police inspector in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, refusing to pay for eyeglass repairs and allegedly threatening the shopkeeper. The incident reportedly occurred on July 25, 2025, at Chashma Point, an optical shop in the Ramai Patti area, which falls under the City Kotwali Police Station's jurisdiction.
According to Dr. Ajit Singh, the shop owner, the inspector came to the store to replace the lenses in a pair of eyeglasses, a service that cost ₹800. However, after the work was completed, the inspector refused to pay, behaving rudely and eventually leaving with the repaired glasses. CCTV footage captured the incident, showing the inspector speaking harshly to Dr. Singh and saying, "I will not pay. Do whatever you can," as he exited the shop. Dr. Singh also alleged that the inspector used abusive language and issued threats.
Dr. Singh stated that the inspector had visited the shop on July 22nd and made an online transaction for a branded pair of glasses which were to be delivered in four days, coming from Bangalore. The dispute arose when the inspector returned to change the lenses of a second pair of glasses. Dr. Singh explained that the ₹800 charge was for the lens replacement, which had been communicated in advance due to the need to order the lens. When it was time to pay, the inspector allegedly refused and demanded a price reduction. Dr. Singh informed him that the price was system-generated with minimal margin, but the inspector continued to argue and abuse him, stating, "do whatever you can I will not pay". Dr. Singh emphasized that "there shouldn't be hooliganism and decency should be maintained in the district".
Mirzapur police have responded to the situation, stating that the shopkeeper initially demanded ₹1,500 for the spectacles, which included ₹800 for the lens replacement. They claim the police official had already paid ₹5,000 for the new spectacles but refused to pay the additional ₹800 for the lens change. The police have stated that an inquiry is underway, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings. Mirzapur Police also posted a photo of a UPI transaction as proof of payment and accused the shopkeeper of misrepresenting the facts.
The video of the incident has been widely circulated on social media, drawing condemnation and sparking debate.
