The fourth Test between India and England at Old Trafford is heading for a tense final day, with England pushing for a victory and India looking to batten down the hatches for a draw. After four days of enthralling cricket, the match hangs in the balance, with Shubman Gill and KL Rahul tasked with leading India's resistance against a formidable English attack.

England, leading the series 2-1, posted a massive first-innings total of 669, built around Ben Stokes's superb 141 and Joe Root's earlier contribution. India were bundled out for 358 in their first innings, handing England a significant lead. Facing a daunting deficit of 311 runs, India's second innings began disastrously, with Chris Woakes dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan for ducks in the first over.

However, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul orchestrated a remarkable fightback, defying the English bowlers for nearly five hours. At the close of play on Day 4, India reached 174/2, still trailing by 137 runs. Gill remained firm on 78, while Rahul was unbeaten on 87, their unbroken partnership providing India with renewed hope of securing a draw.

The resilience of Gill and Rahul was evident as they navigated a tricky period after India were reduced to 0/2. Their 174-run partnership is now the highest after a team was reduced to 0/2, surpassing the previous best of 105 held by Mohinder Amarnath and Gundappa Vishwanath. The duo exhibited a blend of caution and determination, frustrating the English bowlers and denying them opportunities to capitalize.

Looking ahead to Day 5, the weather in Manchester could play a crucial role. There is a high probability of rain, particularly in the morning session. Washed-out sessions could increase India's chances of securing a draw, which would keep the series alive until the final Test at The Oval. However, intermittent rain breaks could disrupt India's momentum and allow England to regain the upper hand.

The second new ball is also due, which could pose a significant challenge for the Indian batsmen. England will be eager to exploit the new ball and break the partnership between Gill and Rahul, while India will aim to continue their resistance and inch closer to saving the Test.

Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers with four wickets. However, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Washington Sundar all conceded more than 100 runs. Ben Stokes became only the 5th male captain in history to slam a century and take a five-for in the same match.

India will need to bat for at least four sessions to secure a draw. The opening session will be crucial, as they look to see off the new ball and build on their overnight partnership. Gill and Rahul have demonstrated their ability to soak up pressure and blunt the opposition's attack. Their performance on Day 5 will be pivotal in determining the outcome of the match and the fate of the series.
