A special court in Bengaluru has convicted former Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) Member of Parliament, Prajwal Revanna, in a rape case filed against him. The conviction is related to the first of four rape cases registered against him. The verdict was delivered on Friday, August 1, 2025.
The case was filed by a 47-year-old woman who worked as a domestic help at Revanna's family farmhouse in Hassan district, Karnataka. She accused Revanna of repeatedly raping her since 2021 and threatening to release videos of the abuse if she revealed the incidents to anyone. According to the victim, the assaults occurred twice at the family's farmhouse in Gannikada, Hassan district, and once at their residence in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru. The victim stated that she was called inside a room at the farmhouse under the pretext of bringing water, where the first assault occurred. The second instance took place when she accompanied the family to their house in Bengaluru. The victim continued working for the family because she had borrowed Rs 50,000 from them and needed to repay it.
The trial commenced on May 2, 2025, with the recording of the survivor's statement. Special Public Prosecutor Ashok Nayak stated that 26 witnesses were cross-examined during the trial, and 180 documents were marked as exhibits. The court framed charges against Prajwal Revanna under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act, including sections 376(2)(k) (rape by someone in a position of authority), 376(2)(n) (repeated rape), 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (disrobing a woman), 354C (voyeurism), 506 (criminal intimidation), 201 (destruction of evidence), and 66E (violation of privacy).
Following the scandal that broke out in April 2024, the victim was allegedly kidnapped at the behest of Prajwal's parents, H.D. Revanna and Bhavani Revanna, to prevent her from testifying against their son. However, she was later rescued from a farmhouse in K.R. Nagar by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Additional Director-General of Police (ADGP) B.K. Singh of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The 1,625-page chargesheet indicated that the victim was sexually assaulted thrice. Evidence presented in court included forensic reports confirming the presence of sperm on the victim's saree. After the verdict, reports indicated that Prajwal Revanna broke down in court. The quantum of the sentence is scheduled to be pronounced on August 2.
