The Northern Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Pratik Sharma, recently conducted a review of the security situation in the Pir Panjal region, which includes the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. This visit underscores the Indian Army's commitment to maintaining peace and stability in this sensitive area, particularly in light of recent escalations in militant activities and cross-border tensions.
During his visit, Lt. Gen. Sharma interacted with troops and emphasized the need for an aggressive posture, continuous surveillance, and sustained mission readiness. He stressed the importance of dominating the operational space and neutralizing emerging threats effectively. Accompanied by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the White Knight Corps, Lt. Gen. Sharma visited forward posts to assess the operational environment, including the deployment of counter-insurgency and counter-infiltration forces. The focus was on evaluating ground posture and threat response mechanisms in this critical region.
The Pir Panjal range has witnessed a surge in militant infiltration and terrorist encounters in recent months. Notably, a fierce gunfight occurred in Basantgarh on April 24, resulting in casualties. These incidents highlight the persistent threat posed by cross-border terrorism and the need for constant vigilance.
In response to the growing security challenges, the Indian Army has intensified its operations in the Pir Panjal region. Helicopters have been deployed to assist in combing operations across the rugged terrain, where militants are believed to have taken refuge. A temporary lockdown was enforced in Basantgarh to aid the manhunt. Simultaneously, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is actively pursuing leads by analyzing CCTV footage to trace the attackers' movements.
The Northern Command, headquartered in Udhampur, holds strategic significance as the frontline force defending India's northern borders, including the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. Lt Gen. Sharma's visit is a reaffirmation of the Army's resolve to counter growing threats from across the border.
In addition to assessing operational readiness, Lt. Gen. Sharma has also focused on strengthening civil-military cooperation. He held a special interaction with civil defense employees and military veterans, thanking them for their enduring support and contributions to national security. He reaffirmed the Army's commitment to strengthening civil-military cooperation, particularly in areas related to disaster preparedness and community outreach.
The security situation in the hinterland and along the borders of the Jammu region remains peaceful and under control, with security forces maintaining a strong vigil. Multi-tier measures, including an anti-drone strategy, additional deployments, and a focus on intensified night operations, have been put in place to keep terrorists on their toes. Around 40 to 50 terrorists, primarily Pakistani nationals, are estimated to be operating in multiple groups south of the Pir Panjal range.
The Indian Army's commitment to maintaining a strong security posture in the Pir Panjal region is unwavering. Lt. Gen. Sharma reiterated the Army's commitment to operational excellence and preparedness, highlighting the importance of proactive measures in maintaining peace and stability in the region. The ongoing search and security operations are part of a larger counterterrorism strategy aimed at denying militants any safe haven in Jammu and Kashmir. The Northern Command remains resolute in its mission to safeguard national sovereignty and ensure the safety of civilians.
